(this is soo chemically sick ahaha)
production of Aluminium from Aluminium ore
(the hardest part to memorize in metal production!! wekk!)
Aluminium minerals contains impurities - Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3
Crusher:
to increase surface area for higher rate of reaction
Digester:
dissolved with hot caustic soda (NaOH) - Na2SiO3, NaAlO2, Fe2O3
Filter 1:
discard red mud (Fe2O3)
Precipitate:
add H2O & seed crystal of hydrated alumina
2NaAlO2 + 4H2O ---> Al2O3.3H2O + 2NaOH
Filter 2:
separate hydrated alumina from Na2SiO3
Rotary kiln:
Calcination > roasting of hydrated alumina = powder (anhydrous alumina Al2O3)
Electrolytic reduction:
electrolyte > alumina dissolved in molten cryolite (eg: Na3AlF6)
electrodes > graphite (replaced periodically - electrodes burnt away)
anode [o]: 2O2- ---> 4e- + O2
cathode [r]: Al3+ + 3e- ---> Al
overall: Al2O3 ---> 2Al + 3/2O2

^_^ i was suggested by daniel to blog about chemistry since i'm awake for blogging BUT will certainly be falling asleep if i read chemistry notes haha...quite a good idea though! got it almost perfect now, whee~
p/s: did not refer to any chem books OK!~
....
fine! i lied! i peep the book a bit =P
ekk, metal production?
